Builders have the opportunity to design their entire home technology system according to their individual needs. In addition to customized Smart Home solutions, Gira further offers numerous resources for building owners.

1. Getting started

What kind of opportunities does modern building technology offer? Which Gira products suit your desires and requirements? As an introduction to the world of Gira Smart Homes, the Gira website provides an initial overview. If you want to delve deeper, compare systems, and understand how smart technology works, our Smart Home Guide provides answers to everything you need to know to get started. You can download the PDF containing key information and practical application examples for free.

2. Setting up a Smart Home with Gira

At the initial stages of your journey towards a Smart Home, it's important to consider which areas and functions you want to connect and automate. From lighting, blinds, and heating to home entertainment, appliances, and even security and locking systems, nearly all components of your home technology can be integrated into one single smart system.

Gira's representatives and system integrators can provide advice and guidance when planning your Smart Home. This way you can get a clearer idea of the necessary equipment, the scope of your project, and the associated costs.

3. Planning the electrical installation

The foundation of every individual electrical plan is the floor plan of a house or flat. Together with your architect or qualified electrician, you'll determine the future extent of your electrical system's equipment. Particularly in new construction projects, planning of the electrical installation is carried out in close consultation with your architect. This starts with initial design plans, followed by the creation of a detailed room book. This digital floor plan records all the technical components required in each room and for each area.

For the room book, it's important to consider in advance how you intend to use the rooms and which connections will be necessary. To do this, it's best to consider your current habits. For a study or living room, it would for example be wise to plan in more power outlets than in a bedroom or children's room.

Smart Homes represent the future of living and are already a reality for many people. But how can you successfully transform your home into an intelligent one? Planning goes hand in hand with multiple trades. These should also be involved early on, as their work often overlaps. Key trades to consider include:

  • Heating, plumbing, and air conditioning: Consultation on plumbing installation, as well as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, is carried out in conjunction with a plumbing and HVAC company. It's a good idea to prepare by doing some online research beforehand.

  • Energy generation: Your energy supplier and electrician will give you professional advice on producing your own energy (e.g. using photovoltaics or a heat pump) and on e-mobility.

  • Security technology and alarm systems: You can integrate electronic windows and doors into your alarm system using magnetic or reed contacts, as well as glass break sensors. Keyless entry through Gira Keyless In is also a viable option. For such installations, window manufacturers or security system providers are the go-to experts.

  • Smart solutions: The networking of all your (smart) home technology is carried out by qualified electrical contractors and systems integrators.

4. Gira system integrators

These are certified professionals for KNX and IP installations, who possess specialized qualifications and regularly attend training sessions on new products and data security. Your personal contact person will guide you from the selection of Gira products to commissioning and beyond – e.g. system maintenance or subsequent expansions. Ideally, you should involve a KNX and IP expert from day one on, as this allows them to tailor their approach precisely to your needs and the spatial conditions of your property.

It's generally advisable to opt for a certified system that supports a multitude of applications and is flexible for future expansion. For wired networking, the internationally recognized KNX standard is considered the benchmark. The special cables for your KNX Smart Home are installed during construction along with the electrical wiring.

6. Price calculation

Once you have selected a system and suitable products, your system integrator will prepare a quote. The basis for this calculation is the floor plans and the room book. Your expected costs will primarily depend on the type of system you choose. In addition to a wired KNX system, Gira offers several alternatives: the Bluetooth-based Gira System 3000 for smart lighting, blind, and heating control, or the Gira KNX RF system for easy retrofitting in existing buildings.

In addition to the costs for materials used, which are calculated from Gira products and other necessary components for the electrical installation, further service costs are to be expected. These include cable laying, installation, programming, or parameter setting (commissioning of the KNX system), as well as the briefing and documentation. Depending on the requirements, these service costs can vary significantly.

7. Installation and commissioning

Once all components are finalized, your system integrator or electrician will begin their work on-site. The amount of time you should plan for completion will depend on various individual factors. Depending on the scope of the project, the workload of the trades involved, and current delivery times, it's best to anticipate at least six months of work.

8. Maintenance and support

To keep your Gira Smart Home up-to-date or to make adjustments after a successful installation, professional support is essential. Therefore, your system integrator or qualified electrician will continue to assist you after commissioning. They are responsible for the maintenance and ensure that the Gira products used are registered in the Gira Device portal. Regular updates help to protect your Smart Home from potential security vulnerabilities at all times.
